Fling meaning: what a fling is, where the word comes from and how to have one well

What the word means, where it comes from, how a fling differs from a hookup or a situationship, what research says about casual relationships and how to enjoy one kindly.

In short

A fling is a short, casual romance or sexual relationship that both people expect to stay light and temporary. It lasts longer than a one night stand, and it works best when you are honest about what you want and look after each other.

What does fling mean?

A fling is a short, casual romance or sexual relationship, usually with no plan to make it permanent. The word also covers a brief spell of fun and indulgence, as in “one last fling before the end of summer”.

The dictionaries agree on the basics. Merriam-Webster defines it as a casual or brief love affair, Cambridge describes having one as a short sexual relationship with someone, and Collins says two people who have one share a brief relationship. None of them gives a length, because there is not one: it can last a weekend or a season.

What sets it apart is the shared understanding that it is light and temporary. Nobody expects a future, and nobody needs to pretend there is one.

What does it mean to have one?

Having one means getting involved with someone for a short while, for the enjoyment of it rather than the future. You see each other more than once, which is the main difference from a single night, and you enjoy the company without building plans around it.

Some people also use the word for a holiday romance, an affair at work or a brief reunion with an ex. The common thread is that both people treat it as a chapter, not the whole story.

Where does the word fling come from?

The word has an old Scandinavian root. Etymonline traces it to Old Norse words for flogging and to a medieval verb meaning to dash or rush, and Collins gives the same Scandinavian origin. In the early fourteenth century the noun meant an attempt, which is why “have a go at something” once sounded like “have a fling at it”.

The idea of a wild, indulgent period shows up in the nineteenth century, when a last stretch of fun came before responsibilities arrived. The Highland fling, a lively Scottish dance, is a separate sense of the same word.

How is a fling different from a hookup, a one night stand or friends with benefits?

It usually lasts longer than a single meeting and is often romantic as well as physical. A hookup, in Cambridge's words, is a meeting for sex, and a one night stand is one night only. Friends with benefits starts as a friendship and keeps a casual physical side. A situationship is a romantic connection that has not been given a label, which is not the same as a fling that both people know is temporary.

A fling runs for a short while, while the other casual labels describe one meeting, one night or an ongoing friendship.

Our guides explain the neighbours in more detail: what a one night stand is, how a booty call works, the rules of friends with benefits and what a situationship means. For the wider picture of casual dating, see what casual dating is.

What does research say about casual relationships?

Researchers group flings with one night stands and friends with benefits, and with hookups, under the label casual sexual relationships. A review of 71 studies in the Journal of Sex Research found that people rated these experiences more positively than negatively overall. It also found that in most of the studies that tracked emotional health over a year, it dipped for a while after a casual experience.

How people felt depended on who they were and the circumstances. Outcomes were worse for women and for people who were less comfortable with casual relationships, and for people who had been drinking, were not sexually satisfied or did not know their partner well. The authors also note that much of the research is on young adults and students, so it says less about people in midlife.

How do you keep it kind?

It goes best when both of you know what it is and look after each other along the way. These habits cover most of it.

  1. Say what you want: tell them early that you are after something light, so nobody hopes for more.
  2. Meet somewhere public first: a coffee or a walk lets you check the chemistry before anything else.
  3. Be honest about other people: if you are seeing others, say so, and ask the same of them.
  4. Agree on protection: talk about condoms before things get going, and get tested regularly.
  5. Check in now and then: a quick “are we still on the same page?” keeps surprises small.
  6. Respect a no: consent can be withdrawn at any time, for one thing or everything.

What if one of you starts to want more?

It happens, and it is nobody's fault. If your feelings change, say so once, clearly and kindly, and let the other person answer honestly. If they want to keep it light, you can decide whether to carry on or step back.

The same goes the other way. If someone tells you they have developed feelings and you have not, a clear and gentle no is kinder than a vague maybe.

How do you end things well?

End it with a short, honest message or a conversation, not by disappearing. Thank them for the good times, say that you are stopping, and do not leave the door half open if you mean it to be shut. Because it was never meant to be permanent, ending it does not have to feel like a failure.

Give each other some space afterwards, and be kind if you run into each other.

Is it safe?

It is as safe as you make it. Condoms used correctly and every time are one of the most effective ways to protect against STIs, according to the World Health Organization, though they do not cover every infection, and many STIs have no symptoms, so regular testing matters. The NHS says the only way to know for sure is to get tested.

Meet in public first, tell a friend where you are going, and keep your address and workplace private until you trust the person. Someone you know only from a screen who asks you for cash gets a firm no, every time. More on this is on our safety page, and the first date tips cover your first meeting.

Where can you find a fling?

The simplest way to find one is to go where people say plainly what they want. You can join Joydate for free, and profiles state what each member is after, which means your opening line reaches someone already on your wavelength. Free members get some messages daily; VIP removes the cap.

Wherever you meet, the same few rules apply: be straight with each other, take a no seriously and keep an eye out for one another.

Quick answers about flings

What is a fling in dating?

A fling in dating is a short, casual romance, usually with no plan for a long-term future. Both people treat it as light and temporary, even if it lasts several weeks or a whole summer.

How long does a fling last?

A fling can last anything from a weekend to a season, because no dictionary sets a length for it. It lasts longer than a single night and ends when one or both of you decide it has run its course.

Is a fling the same as a hookup?

A fling is not quite the same as a hookup. A hookup can be a single meeting for sex, whereas this usually involves seeing each other more than once and may feel more romantic.

Can a fling turn into a relationship?

It can turn into a relationship when both people want that and say so. That does not happen every time, and neither of you should count on it or feel pushed into it.

How do you find someone who wants a fling too?

To find someone who wants a fling too, start where people are open about it. Joydate profiles show what each member is looking for, so your first chat is with someone who already agrees.
