Hookup meaning: what a hookup is, how it differs from a one night stand and how to keep it safe

The meaning of the word, how it compares with a one night stand, a booty call and friends with benefits, what research says about how people feel afterwards and how to stay safe.

In short

A hookup is a casual sexual encounter between two people who are not in a relationship, with no expectation of a commitment afterwards. The word covers a lot, so it helps to say what you mean, use protection and respect a no.

What does hookup mean?

In dating, a hookup is a casual sexual encounter between two people who are not in a relationship. Cambridge Dictionary defines the noun as “a meeting for sex”, and Merriam-Webster lists it as an act of hooking up, especially a casual sexual encounter. The word has other meanings too: a hookup can also be a connection to electricity, water or the internet, which is why the dating sense is the informal one.

Nobody expects a commitment afterwards. That is the point of the word: it describes an encounter, not a relationship.

What does it mean to hook up with someone?

To hook up with someone means to meet them for something physical, without promising anything more. How far it goes is left unsaid, which is a big part of why the word is so popular and so confusing.

Researchers have noticed the same thing. Garcia and colleagues, in a 2012 review in the journal Review of General Psychology, describe hookups as “brief uncommitted sexual encounters among individuals who are not romantic partners or dating each other”, and say the behaviour can range from kissing to intercourse. A 2013 study in the Journal of Sex Research found that college students themselves were not sure what the term covers.

So if someone says they want a hookup, ask what they mean. A short, friendly question saves a lot of awkwardness.

How is a hookup different from a one night stand, a booty call or friends with benefits?

Think of hookup as the umbrella and the rest as narrower cases. Merriam-Webster describes a one night stand as a sexual encounter limited to a single occasion. A booty call is a message, call or visit to arrange sex, usually late and at short notice. Friends with benefits means a friend you also share a casual physical side with, while a fling is a short romance that lasts a while. A situationship is a romantic connection nobody has put a name to, which is something else again.

Five casual dating terms compared: hookup, booty call, one night stand, friends with benefits and fling, each with a one-line meaning
A hookup is a single casual encounter, while the neighbouring terms add a late-night text, one night only, an ongoing friendship or a short romance.

Each neighbour has its own guide: the one night stand, the booty call, the friends with benefits rules, the fling and the situationship. The big picture is in what casual dating is.

How common are hookups, and how do people feel afterwards?

Hookups are common among young adults in North America, though most of the research comes from college students. The Garcia review reports that 60 to 80 percent of North American college students have had some kind of hookup experience, and it describes the surveys behind that range as a mix of different samples.

The feelings afterwards are mixed. In a study of 311 young adults who had hooked up, 82 percent of men and 57 percent of women were generally glad about it the next morning. In another study of 832 college students, 50 percent of men and 26 percent of women had a positive emotional reaction, while 26 percent of men and 49 percent of women had a negative one.

A systematic review published in the Journal of Sex Research, covering 71 studies, found that people judged casual sexual experiences more favourably than unfavourably, although most of the studies that tracked people for a year saw emotional health slip for a while. Outcomes were weaker for women, for those who felt less at ease with casual sex, for those who had been drinking and for those who barely knew their partner. Almost all of it concerns young adults and students, so it says little about midlife.

How do you set up a hookup that goes well?

A hookup works out when you are both clear about what it is and you take care of each other. A handful of habits does most of the work.

  1. Be clear early: mention that you want something casual before you meet, so nobody expects a sequel.
  2. Ask what they mean: the word covers a lot, so check you are picturing the same evening.
  3. Meet somewhere public first: a coffee or a drink lets you check the chemistry before you go anywhere private.
  4. Sort protection first: bring up condoms before anything starts, and have regular tests.
  5. Go easy on the drinks: the research above links drinking beforehand to worse outcomes, and consent needs a clear head.
  6. Accept a no: anyone can take back their consent at any moment, for one thing or for all of it.

What if one of you wants more afterwards?

That happens, and nobody is to blame. Should your feelings shift, tell them once, plainly and kindly, and give them room to answer truthfully. If they would rather stay casual, it is up to you whether to continue or walk away.

It can run the opposite way too. When someone confesses feelings you do not share, a clear, gentle no is a kindness, and a vague maybe is not.

Is a hookup safe?

Safety is largely in your hands. The World Health Organization says condoms used correctly and consistently are among the most effective protections against STIs, but they do not cover every infection, and STIs often show no symptoms, which is why testing matters. The NHS puts it simply: the only way to know is to get tested.

Start in a public place, let a friend know your plans and hold back your address and workplace until you trust the person. Anyone you only know through a screen who asks for money gets a flat refusal. Our safety page goes further, and the first date tips help with the first meeting.

Where can you find a hookup?

The easiest route is a place where people say openly what they want. Joydate is free to join, and each profile states what that member is after, so a first message lands with someone who already shares your aim. Free members can send a few messages a day, and VIP has no cap. For specific places, see how to find a hookup, country by country.

The basics are the same wherever you meet: be honest, believe a no and look out for each other.

Quick answers about hookups

What does hookup mean?

Hookup means a casual sexual encounter between two people who are not in a relationship. Cambridge Dictionary defines it as a meeting for sex, and nobody expects a commitment afterwards.

What does it mean to hook up with someone?

To hook up with someone means to meet them for something physical, without promising more. How far it goes is not fixed, so it is worth asking what the other person means.

Is a hookup the same as a one night stand?

A hookup is not always a one night stand. The second is limited to a single occasion, while the first is the broader word and can happen with the same person more than once.

How is a hookup different from friends with benefits?

A hookup differs from friends with benefits because it usually has no friendship behind it. Friends with benefits begins as a friendship that gains a casual physical side, whereas a hookup can be with someone you met this week.

How do you find someone who wants a hookup too?

Look for someone who wants a hookup too in places where people are upfront about it. Each Joydate profile says what the member is seeking, so you can write to someone who already agrees.
